GOALS
Going from 2D design to assembly and rendering in Houdini Solaris, the focus was on maintaining a fairly stylized look, but still having fun with highly detailed materials and a tactile feel.
This project was a chance to use some of my custom hair deformer technology and a few other bits and pieces of RnD.

PROCESS
After an inital round of sketches, the model was created with a combinaison of Zbrush and Maya.
My texture process involves a mix of Mari and Painter, as well as procedural materials and displacement generators.
The hair is groomed in Houdini, and the interpolation is handled with a custom HairGen algorithm that has a more predictable behavior than the native one.
A CFX setup is made in Houdini as well to handle cloth, necklaces and hair simulations.
Finally the scene is assembled, lookdev'd and lit in USD/Solaris/Redshift. The hair deformation is handled procedurally by avGroom, a custom hair deformer, implemented as a native SOP node, as well as a USD plugin, and a Maya plugin.
